About Meadville

Located in Northwest Pennsylvania, Meadville was settled in 1788 by David Mead and nine others. Its prosperity can be linked to the rich farm lands of the French Creek Valley. It was designated the Crawford County seat in 1880.

Today, Meadville is home to more than 13,000 residents. City, county and state government offices are conveniently located in the downtown business district. The city is also an active center for business, industry, education, the arts, recreation, service and tourism. Allegheny College and Edinboro University both have campuses located within city limits. The Academy Theatre showcases productions with local talent. The Meadville Area Recreation Complex provides year-round activities for all ages.

The historic downtown Meadville Market House supplies locally grown produce year-round. Built in 1870, it is Pennsylvania's oldest continuously run market structure. The Market House serves as a venue to sell area produce and products, as well as a meeting place and a link between the town community and surrounding farms. In its early days, the Market House was a place of great importance, and today it remains one of the main links to maintaining downtown Meadville's business district.

Meadville is a progressive small city. With an eye toward reducing operating costs and efficiently stewarding public tax dollars, the city has embarked upon a number of sustainability initiatives in recent years to minimize its environmental footprint and enhance the community’s quality of life. City government has partnered with local business, academia, citizen volunteers and many others to advance its sustainable practices according to the definition of a sustainable community outlined by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Meadville hosts four annual events: the Meadville Memorial Day Parade, Thurston Classic Hot Air Balloon Event, Thunder in the City Classic Car & Bike Show, and the Meadville Halloween Parade.
